The United States of America was founded on a revolutionary idea: that all individuals are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This principle, enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, rejected the old-world hierarchies of group privilege, hereditary status, and collective guilt. It affirmed the dignity of the unique person over the claims of tribe, clan, or class. Yet today, a corrosive resurgence of tribalism threatens to unravel this foundation. At the Center for Human Equality in Oregon, founded by Russell McAlmond, we champion Ethical Individualism—the belief that every American must be treated as a sovereign individual, not reduced to a member of any group. We stand firmly opposed to group judgmentalism in all its forms. The path forward lies not in elevating or demonizing tribes, but in recommitting to the individual rights that unite us as Americans.Tribalism—whether based on race, ethnicity, ideology, religion, class, or any other collective marker—divides people into opposing camps. It encourages individuals to view their fellow citizens not as neighbors with shared humanity, but as avatars of their group identity. This mindset fosters suspicion, resentment, and conflict. In place of reasoned debate and mutual respect, tribalism substitutes loyalty tests, purity spirals, and zero-sum power struggles. It promotes the supremacism of “my tribe” over others, implying that some groups deserve special elevation while others merit suspicion or diminishment. Such thinking is profoundly un-American. The Founders explicitly rejected rule by faction or interest group, designing a republic grounded in individual liberty and equality under the law precisely to guard against these dangers. History bears witness to tribalism’s failures. From ancient blood feuds to modern ethnic conflicts, societies organized around group identity have repeatedly descended into violence and stagnation. In America, the ideal of e pluribus unum—“out of many, one”—was meant to transcend such divisions by forging a common national identity rooted in shared principles, not ancestry or grievance. When Americans are judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin—or any other group attribute—we build trust and cooperation. When we revert to group-based scorekeeping, we erode that trust. Demonization of entire categories of people as “oppressors” or “privileged,” paired with the elevation of others as inherently virtuous or victimized, recreates the very hierarchies the nation was founded to dismantle. This approach does not heal past wrongs; it perpetuates new ones by teaching Americans to see one another as enemies rather than compatriots. The harms of tribalism extend beyond interpersonal relations. It poisons institutions, from education to government to commerce, by prioritizing group quotas, narrative conformity, and collective guilt over merit, truth, and individual accountability. It undermines the unity necessary for solving real national challenges—economic opportunity, technological progress, infrastructure, and defense of liberty. Bitter rivalries between tribes distract from the common good and sap the energy required to improve the country. Instead of working together to expand freedom and prosperity for all, tribalism channels human effort into perpetual grievance and retaliation. No matter how a “tribe” is constructed—whether by immutable characteristics or chosen ideologies—the outcome is the same: fragmentation that weakens the republic.Ethical Individualism offers the antidote. This philosophy insists that rights belong to persons, not groups. It demands that we evaluate individuals based on their actions, choices, and character, not inherited identity. It rejects both supremacism and collective condemnation, affirming the equal moral worth and potential of every unique American. By focusing on the individual, we honor human diversity in its truest sense: the infinite variety of thoughts, talents, dreams, and responsibilities found within each person. This approach fosters genuine empathy and understanding, because it requires us to engage with people as they are, not as avatars of a category. It encourages personal responsibility, innovation, and voluntary cooperation—the engines of American success.Returning to these principles requires courage and clarity. We must reject policies and rhetoric that sort Americans into favored and disfavored groups. We must teach our children to see beyond surface identities to the shared humanity and equal rights of every individual. Educational institutions, media, and leaders at all levels should promote critical thinking and individual agency rather than group loyalty. Civil discourse must be restored, where disagreement is met with argument rather than ostracism. Only by treating every American as a unique individual—possessed of equal rights and equal dignity—can we build a society that moves forward in human relations rather than backward into division. The Center for Human Equality calls on all Americans to reject the siren song of tribalism. Our nation’s greatness stems not from perfect group harmony but from the audacious commitment to individual liberty and equality. By recommitting to these founding ideals, we can overcome resentment, heal divisions, and renew the American promise. Let us choose unity through individuality. Let us choose progress through respect for the unique person. In doing so, we secure not only a more peaceful and harmonious society, but a freer and more prosperous one for generations to come.

The Resurgence of Tribalism in the USA

Ethical Individualism: The Foundation of Moral Justice in AmericaThe Center for Human Equality in Oregon stands firmly for a principle as old as our nation’s founding and as vital today as ever: every human being is an individual of inherent worth, created equal, and accountable for their own actions. We call this Ethical Individualism. It is not merely a political stance but the optimal relational philosophy for human flourishing in the United States. It rejects the corrosive pull of tribalism and collective identity politics, insisting instead that justice must be blind to skin color, ancestry, or group affiliation. Nowhere is this principle more urgently needed than in our justice system, where the recent conviction and sentencing of Karmelo Anthony exemplify its moral clarity. In April 2025, at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in the chest, killing him. Anthony, now 19, was tried as an adult, convicted of murder by a jury in Collin County, and sentenced to 35 years in prison on June 9, 2026. The evidence, including Anthony’s own actions and the circumstances of the altercation, led the jury to reject claims of self-defense. This outcome was not about race. It was about individual responsibility: one young man took the life of another, and society held him accountable. The Primacy of the IndividualEthical Individualism holds that human beings are not avatars of their racial, ethnic, or cultural groups. We are unique persons with agency, conscience, and moral responsibility. Our actions—good or evil—belong to us alone. When we judge individuals by the content of their character and the facts of their conduct, we honor the Declaration of Independence’s truth that all are “created equal” with unalienable rights. When we subordinate justice to group identity, we betray that truth. The alternative—collective identity politics—reduces people to members of tribes. It demands that we weigh the race of the perpetrator against the race of the victim before rendering judgment. In the Anthony case, some voices defended the killer or decried the verdict primarily because Anthony is Black and Metcalf was White. This is the worst kind of racism: it excuses the taking of an innocent life based on skin color. It tells the world that a Black teenager who admits to (or is proven to have committed) murder should face lesser consequences simply because of his group membership. Such thinking is not anti-racism; it is inverted racism that devalues both the victim’s life and the perpetrator’s moral agency. The Center for Human Equality utterly opposes this group judgmentalism. Tribalism places loyalty to “our side” above human morality. It erodes the rule of law and replaces evidence with narrative. True equality demands that we mourn every lost life equally—Black, White, or any other background—and hold every killer accountable equally. Austin Metcalf’s life mattered no less, and no more, because of his race. Karmelo Anthony’s crime warranted punishment no less, and no more, because of his.Why Ethical Individualism Serves Justice and SocietyIndividual accountability strengthens society in several concrete ways:It protects the innocent. When justice becomes a racial balancing act, victims from disfavored groups are devalued. A system that excuses violence based on the perpetrator’s identity leaves everyone less safe. It promotes personal responsibility. Young people of all backgrounds learn that their choices have consequences independent of group grievances. This fosters maturity, self-control, and genuine progress rather than perpetual grievance. It upholds the Founders’ vision. The United States was founded on the radical idea that rights inhere in individuals, not collectives. “All men are created equal” did not mean equal outcomes or group privileges; it meant equal moral standing before the law. Our Constitution’s guarantees of due process and equal protection were designed to prevent the very tribal favoritism some now demand. It combats the worst racism. Defending a confessed or convicted murderer solely because “he looks like us” is dehumanizing to everyone involved. It implies that members of certain groups are less capable of moral choice and thus less fully human. Ethical Individualism rejects this paternalism. Every person is capable of right and wrong, and every person must answer for it. Those who protested the Anthony verdict or pressured for leniency on racial grounds engaged in precisely the collective thinking our Center rejects. They prioritized tribal solidarity over the clear moral fact of a young man’s death. Metcalf’s own father emphasized that the issue was right and wrong, not race—modeling the individualism we champion. A Call to Moral ConsistencyThe Center for Human Equality in Oregon calls on all Americans—regardless of background—to embrace Ethical Individualism as our shared relational philosophy. Let us judge actions, not ancestries. Let us extend equal respect to every victim and equal justice to every perpetrator. Only then can we move beyond the racial divisions that have plagued our history toward a society where every individual can thrive on their own merits.Karmelo Anthony’s conviction and 35-year sentence affirm this principle. They demonstrate that no group identity shields a person from accountability for taking another human life. That is not “systemic” anything—it is justice. It honors Austin Metcalf’s memory, upholds the rule of law, and reaffirms the founding promise that in America, we are individuals first, last, and always.Equality before the law is not optional. It is the bedrock of a moral republic. The Center for Human Equality will continue to defend it against all forms of tribalism, because every human life is irreplaceable, and every human action demands individual judgment.

Equality of Justice in the USA

The Infinite Worth of Every Human Being: From Ancient Torah to Ethical IndividualismAt the heart of every great ethical and humanistic tradition lies a single revolutionary idea: every human being possesses infinite, equal, and intrinsic worth. This principle rejects all hierarchies of superior and inferior persons based on tribe, race, ethnicity, class, or any group identity. It demands that we see each person as a unique, irreplaceable individual created with sacred dignity. This is the foundation upon which true human equality, justice, and flourishing rest. The Torah’s Breakthrough CommandmentThe journey begins in the Hebrew Bible with one of the most profound moral statements in history. In Leviticus 19:18, God commands through Moses:“You shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” This is not merely a call for polite tolerance. It is a divine imperative to extend empathy, fairness, and active goodwill to others, rooted in the recognition that they are like oneself. The commandment appears in the Holiness Code, calling Israel to reflect God’s own holiness in daily life. While its immediate context addresses the covenant community, it carries seeds of something far greater.Rabbi Akiva: Love as a Great Principle of the TorahCenturies later, the great sage Rabbi Akiva (c. 50–135 CE) elevated this verse to extraordinary status. In the Sifra (a halakhic midrash on Leviticus), he declared:“‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’ — this is a great principle [klal gadol] of the Torah.” For Akiva, this commandment was not peripheral but central. It served as a unifying ethical key that could unlock much of the Torah’s moral vision. Loving one’s neighbor as oneself provides a practical test for all interpersonal commandments. Akiva’s emphasis strengthened communal solidarity, especially during times of persecution. Yet his particular focus on “neighbor” within the covenant people left room for a deeper universal foundation.Ben Azzai’s Universalization: The Image of God in Every HumanAkiva’s contemporary Ben Azzai offered an even greater principle. In the same rabbinic debate, he responded:“‘This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day that God created man, in the likeness of God He made him’ (Genesis 5:1) — this is a greater principle.” Ben Azzai shifted the foundation from covenantal love to universal creation. Every single human being descends from one Adam and bears the tzelem Elohim — the image of God. This confers infinite, equal, and unique value upon all people, Jew and Gentile alike. Scorn or harm to any person is an offense against the divine image itself. Ben Azzai’s teaching universalizes “love your neighbor.” It equalizes human worth ontologically: no human judgment can declare one person or group superior or inferior in intrinsic dignity. This ancient rabbinic voice provides one of the strongest affirmations of Ethical Individualism in world religious literature.Jesus and the Christian TraditionBuilding directly on this Jewish foundation, Jesus of Nazareth affirmed and elevated the commandment even further. When asked which was the greatest commandment in the Law, he replied:“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:36–40) For Christianity, loving your neighbor as yourself is therefore one of the two most important religious commandments, second only to love of God. Jesus expanded the definition of “neighbor” dramatically in the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10), teaching that our neighbor is any person in need — crossing ethnic, religious, and social boundaries. In this way, the New Testament universalized the ancient Torah command into a central ethical pillar of the Christian faith. The Enduring Legacy: Foundation of Humanistic and Religious EthicsThis chain - Torah commandment → Akiva’s elevation → Ben Azzai’s universal grounding in the image of God → Jesus’ declaration as one of the two greatest commandments - profoundly shaped Western civilization and global ethics. It influenced:Jesus’ teaching of the two greatest commandments and the Parable of the Good Samaritan, expanding “neighbor” to all in need. Christian theology of the imago Dei. Enlightenment declarations of human rights. Modern human rights frameworks that affirm inherent dignity regardless of group identity. Virtually every major religious and humanistic tradition has drawn from or converged upon this core insight: the equal infinite worth of the individual. It underpins the rejection of slavery, caste systems, racial supremacy, and collectivist ideologies that subordinate persons to groups.Ethical Individualism in the 21st CenturyToday, Russell McAlmond and the Center for Human Equality in Oregon carry this ancient wisdom forward through Ethical Individualism. McAlmond’s philosophy rests on clear axioms: The infinite and equal worth of every human being. The absolute uniqueness of each person as a “distinct mosaic of experiences.” The rejection of group judgmentalism — judging individuals by collective stereotypes rather than their own character and actions. Ethical Individualism does not deny cultural, ethnic, or religious identities. It insists that no group identity may ever override or define the primary reality of the unique individual. By approaching every person with the presumption of equal value and infinite uniqueness, we create the conditions for genuine respect, trust, and human flourishing. The Urgent Challenge of Our TimeIn the 21st century, we are witnessing a dangerous regression. Rising tribalism, identity politics, ethnic nationalism, and new forms of supremacy threaten to eclipse the hard-won principle of equal infinite worth. People are again being sorted into superior and inferior groups, judged by ancestry, skin color, politics, or collective guilt rather than as unique individuals. This return to tribalism undermines human relations, fuels division, and repeats the darkest patterns of history. If we are to progress — in justice, reconciliation, innovation, and peace — we must move forward, not backward. We must reclaim and strengthen the ethical foundation laid down in Leviticus 19:18, illuminated by Rabbi Akiva and universalized by Ben Azzai, and now articulated for our time in Ethical Individualism. The Center for Human Equality calls upon all Oregonians and all people of goodwill to embrace this vision: See every human being as infinitely valuable, uniquely irreplaceable, and deserving of individual respect. Only by living this truth can we build a society worthy of our shared humanity.Let us go forward together — not as competing tribes, but as unique individuals, each bearing the image of God, each worthy of love as we love ourselves.Center for Human Equality Oregon, USA Promoting Ethical Individualism for a more equal, respectful, and humane world.

Love Your Neighbor As Yourself

Ethical individualism, as promoted by the Center for Human Equality, holds that every human being possesses inherent dignity and unalienable rights by virtue of their individuality, not their membership in any group—whether racial, ethnic, national, or otherwise. True human equality rejects the elevation of one collective above another and insists that moral worth resides in the person, not the tribe or nation. In this framework, we must examine nationalism and patriotism: Do these sentiments inherently conflict with ethical individualism, or can they be reconciled with it? The answer lies in distinguishing crude, supremacist expressions of these ideas from principled ones grounded in the universal dignity of the individual.Nationalism becomes incompatible with human equality when it asserts that citizens of one nation are collectively superior human beings to those of another. This form of nationalism treats nationality as a marker of intrinsic moral or ontological superiority, much like the group-based hierarchies of old Europe that the American founders explicitly rejected. Such thinking reduces individuals to avatars of their national collective and denies the fundamental truth that all people, regardless of birthplace, are created equal. It mirrors the very collectivism that ethical individualism opposes: judging persons by group identity rather than by their character, actions, and rights as unique individuals.Similarly, patriotism devolves into something antithetical to ethical individualism when it manifests as empty flag-waving, jingoism, or performative displays detached from principle. Flying numerous flags from a truck may signal enthusiasm, but without a deep understanding of the values those flags represent, it becomes mere tribal signaling. This shallow patriotism risks fostering an “us versus them” mentality that prioritizes national loyalty over universal human rights and individual liberty. It confuses love of country with contempt for outsiders, elevating the national group above the equal moral standing of all persons.True American patriotism, by contrast, aligns harmoniously with ethical individualism. What makes the United States exceptional is not the supposed superiority of Americans as human beings, but the radical founding idea that all men and women—everywhere—are “created equal” and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights. The Declaration of Independence did not proclaim rights for Americans alone; it articulated a universal truth applicable to every individual on Earth. The American experiment broke from European traditions of group privilege and hereditary status by placing the sovereign individual at the center. Rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness belong to persons, not to classes, estates, or nations. In this sense, genuine patriotism means cherishing and defending these principles precisely because they affirm human equality and individual rights for everyone, not because they grant Americans special moral elevation. There is nothing inherently wrong with nationalism or patriotism when properly understood. A healthy affection for one’s country—its history, culture, achievements, and founding ideals—can coexist with ethical individualism. One can celebrate the unique institutions and liberties that have flourished in the United States without claiming that Americans constitute a superior category of human being. Pride in the nation becomes compatible with human equality when it remains tethered to the recognition that the country’s greatness stems from its commitment to universal principles: equality before the law, protection of individual rights, and rejection of group-based hierarchies. Americans, like all people, are unique individuals. What binds them is not blood or collective essence but voluntary allegiance to a set of ideas that affirm the equal moral worth of every person.Ethical individualism does not demand rootlessness or cosmopolitan indifference. Love of one’s particular home, language, and traditions is a natural human sentiment. The danger arises only when that love mutates into supremacy or excuses the violation of individual rights in the name of national glory. A patriotism rooted in the Declaration’s universalism celebrates America as a beacon for individuals everywhere who seek liberty, not as a fortress claiming collective superiority. Nationalism that defends the sovereignty and constitutional order necessary to protect individual rights can be legitimate; nationalism that subordinates the individual to the glory of the state or the ethnic group cannot. In conclusion, nationalism and patriotism conform with ethical individualism when they remain subordinate to the higher principle of human equality. They must never elevate any nation’s people as superior beings or treat groups within the nation as superior to others. The United States was founded on the revolutionary notion that rights inhere in individuals, not collectives, and that this truth applies universally. Authentic patriotism therefore consists in understanding, upholding, and transmitting these principles—not in superficial displays or supremacist delusions. By grounding national affection in the dignity of the individual person, we honor both our country and the deeper truth of human equality that transcends all borders. This is the path the Center for Human Equality champions: a patriotism of principles, not of blood; a love of country that affirms the equal worth of every human soul.

Nationalism, Patriotism and Ethical Individualism

The Moral Contribution of Ethical Individualism: Filling a Critical Gap in Human Moral DevelopmentThe Center for Human Equality exists to advance a single, urgent idea: every human being is a unique individual of equal inherent worth and must be treated as such. At the heart of this mission lies Ethical Individualism, a secular human relational philosophy that makes a decisive contribution to the moral development of humankind. For the first time in intellectual history, a coherent philosophy has placed the rejection of group judgmentalism — the practice of judging, valuing, or condemning individuals primarily by their membership in a racial, ethnic, religious, political, or ideological group — at the very center of ethical human relations. The Limits of Previous ThinkersMany great minds have come close. After the Holocaust, Karl Jaspers wrote powerfully against collective judgment:“The categorical judgment of a people is always unjust. It presupposes a false substantialization and results in the debasement of the human being as an individual.” Hannah Arendt similarly warned against the moral evasion inherent in collective guilt:“Where all are guilty, nobody is. Guilt, unlike responsibility, always singles out; it is strictly personal.” These statements are important and true as far as they go. Yet they remain limited. They treat group judgmentalism largely as a postwar political or legal problem rather than as a fundamental, everyday moral failure embedded in human relations. They describe the injustice or impracticality of collective judgment, but they do not declare with sufficient moral clarity that the act itself is dehumanizing — that it strips unique human beings of their individuality and prepares the ground for atrocity. No major thinker in world history has made this proposition central: that judging individuals by group is not merely “unjust” but a profound moral evil that consistently produces history’s worst atrocities. The Distinct Contribution of Ethical IndividualismEthical Individualism fills this gap with unmistakable clarity. It asserts three core axioms:Every person is a unique “mosaic of experiences” — a singular center of consciousness, memory, choice, and moral agency. Every human being possesses equal inherent worth by virtue of membership in the human species. Group judgmentalism is inherently immoral because it denies both uniqueness and equality. From Ethical Individualism: A Human Relational Philosophy:“To reduce a unique human being to a representative of a group — whether for praise or condemnation — is to commit a moral atrocity against their very humanity. It is the intellectual and ethical prerequisite for every genocide, every pogrom, every campaign of mass dehumanization in history.” “Group judgmentalism does not merely produce error; it produces evil. It transforms persons into categories, categories into targets, and targets into corpses. No society that tolerates the habitual practice of judging individuals by group can long remain civilized.” “The desire to elevate oneself by belonging to a ‘superior’ group is not a harmless tribal instinct. It is a moral failure that has repeatedly licensed the dehumanization and destruction of millions of unique individuals.” These statements go further than previous thinkers because they identify group judgmentalism as a central relational sin — not a secondary political problem, but a primary ethical deformity that corrupts human relations at their root. The 21st-Century UrgencyThe need for this clarity has never been greater. Antisemitism, ethnic hatred, political tribalism, and identity-based condemnation are not relics of the past — they are resurgent in the twenty-first century. At the very moment when technology gives small groups and even individuals the power to kill on a scale unimaginable to our ancestors, humanity is regressing in its moral understanding of the individual. There can be no more important moral lesson for our time than this: Never judge a human being by their group. Never dehumanize a group of human beings to make it easier to harm them. The Educational ImperativeThe Center for Human Equality therefore commits itself to a sustained educational effort aimed at both children and adults. We must teach, from the earliest ages, that:Every person is unique and irreducible. Group stereotypes and collective guilt are morally false and dangerous. True respect begins with seeing the individual first, not the category. This is not merely an academic exercise. It is a moral necessity for the survival and flourishing of civilized life in an age of advanced weapons and instantaneous propaganda.Ethical Individualism does not claim to be the first philosophy to value the individual. It claims something more precise and urgent: it is the first to make the rejection of group judgmentalism a foundational moral imperative for all human relations. In doing so, it offers humanity a clearer path forward — one that honors the infinite dignity of every unique person and guards against the recurring tragedies that have stained our history. The Center for Human Equality invites all people of goodwill to join this essential work. The moral evolution of our species may well depend on it.

Group Judgmentalism is Immoral

Ethical Individualism and Christianity: Converging Visions of Human Dignity and Relational EthicsIn an age marked by resurgent tribalism, group-based judgment, and identity-driven division, two frameworks offer powerful antidotes: the ancient theological vision of Christianity and the modern secular philosophy of Ethical Individualism. Developed by Russell McAlmond as a human relational philosophy, Ethical Individualism calls us to relate to one another as unique individuals of infinite value, mystery, and worth — not as representatives of tribes or groups. While one is rooted in divine revelation and the other in human reason, they converge remarkably on core truths about what it means to be human and how we ought to treat one another. The Christian Foundation: Imago Dei and Equal DignityAt the heart of Christian anthropology lies the doctrine of Imago Dei — the belief that every human being is created “in the image and likeness of God” (Genesis 1:26–27). This is not a statement about physical resemblance but about inherent dignity, moral agency, and sacred worth. Because the image of God resides in every person — regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, status, or belief — Christianity affirms the infinite and equal value of all human life. True Christianity, when faithful to its sources, rejects supremacism. Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God and to love one’s neighbor as oneself (Matthew 22:37–39). The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10) dramatically illustrates that “neighbor” transcends tribe, ethnicity, or religion. The Apostle Paul reinforced this universalism: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). While Christian history includes tragic failures — crusades, inquisitions, and justifications of slavery — these represent departures from the faith’s foundational logic, not its fulfillment. The core teaching levels all humans before God: all are sinners in need of grace; all bear divine image; none possesses intrinsic superiority.Ethical Individualism: A Secular ParallelMcAlmond’s Ethical Individualism arrives at strikingly similar conclusions without relying on theological premises. Grounded in observable human reality and rational axioms, it posits:Infinite Value: Every human life possesses equal and inherent worth. Infinite Uniqueness: Each person is an irreplaceable “mosaic” of experiences, perceptions, and inner life. Infinite Mystery: The full depth of another’s consciousness remains ultimately unknowable, demanding humility in our judgments. From these axioms flows a human relational philosophy centered on “human qua human” interactions: treating people as unique individuals rather than avatars of groups. This approach optimizes trust, respect, dignity, and symbiotic (win-win) relationships while systematically rejecting group judgmentalism in all forms — whether racial, ethnic, ideological, or national. Like Christianity’s Imago Dei, Ethical Individualism provides a bulwark against dehumanization. Where tribalism reduces persons to collective labels, both frameworks insist on seeing the irreducible individual.Martin Luther King Jr.: The Bridge of Character and DignityNo figure better embodies the practical convergence of these visions than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who earned a doctorate in theology and rooted his activism in Christian conviction. In his 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, King declared:“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” This is not merely a political aspiration; it is a direct application of Christian Imago Dei ethics. By insisting on judgment by character — the unique moral and personal qualities of the individual — King validated the core relational practice of Ethical Individualism. He drew from the biblical tradition while articulating a universal moral demand accessible across lines of faith. King’s dream was not group elevation but the fulfillment of America’s founding promise (itself influenced by Judeo-Christian ideas) that all are created equal.Shared Ground, Complementary Strengths - Both Christianity and Ethical Individualism affirm: Equal Inherent WorthWhether grounded in divine image or rational axioms of infinite value. Individual Primacy — The person, not the tribe, is the fundamental unit of moral concern. Humility in Judgment — Christianity through recognition of universal sinfulness and divine mystery; Ethical Individualism through the axiom of infinite inner mystery. Relational Symbiosis — Calls to love neighbor (Christianity) and to pursue win-win human relations (Ethical Individualism). Where they differ is foundation and scope. Christianity offers a transcendent story of creation, fall, redemption, and ultimate hope in God. It provides spiritual practices, community, and a narrative of sacrificial love (the Cross) that can motivate profound forgiveness and self-giving. Ethical Individualism, being secular and reason-based, appeals to a broader, pluralistic audience in modern, diverse societies. It does not require belief in God yet reaches compatible ethical conclusions through careful observation of human nature and the destructive consequences of group judgmentalism. This complementarity is a strength. A Christian can see Ethical Individualism as a rational articulation of truths already present in Imago Dei. A secular adherent of Ethical Individualism can recognize in Christianity a powerful historical carrier of these same relational principles.A Call to PracticeIn a time of rising antisemitism, defensive tribalism, and identity polarization, both traditions summon us to the same discipline: treat every human being as an end in themselves — infinitely valuable, uniquely irreplaceable, and worthy of respect. Whether we say “made in the image of God” or appeal to the axioms of Ethical Individualism, the relational outcome is the same: move beyond tribalism toward genuine human equality. The Center for Human Equality exists to promote exactly this vision. By championing Ethical Individualism, we extend an invitation to people of all faiths and none to build societies where individuals are seen and related to as the unique persons they truly are. Christianity has helped shape Western civilization’s highest ideals of dignity. Ethical Individualism offers a clear, accessible philosophy to renew those ideals for our time. Together, they remind us that the path away from tragedy lies not in new forms of group supremacy, but in the ancient and ever-new commitment to see the infinite worth in every single human face. Center for Human Equality Promoting respect and equality for every human being through Ethical Individualism.
