The Moral Failure of Group-Based Policing: The Case of Henry Nowak and the Imperative of Ethical IndividualismThe tragic death of 18-year-old Henry Nowak in Southampton, England, in December 2025, stands as a stark indictment of how ideology can corrupt the most fundamental duty of law enforcement: protecting innocent life. Nowak, a university student, was fatally stabbed multiple times by 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa. As Nowak lay dying, pleading that he had been stabbed and could not breathe, police officers—responding to Digwa's false claim of being the victim of a racist attack—handcuffed the bleeding young man instead of providing urgent medical aid. Bodycam footage reveals officers dismissing Nowak's desperate statements with comments like “I don’t think you have, mate,” while prioritizing the narrative of racial victimization pushed by the actual perpetrator. This was not mere incompetence. It was a profound moral failure rooted in a distorted ethical framework that elevates group identity over individual humanity. The British police, influenced by years of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training and policies emphasizing "anti-racism" through group lenses, appear to have allowed fear of a racism accusation to override their duty to assess evidence and save a life. Digwa, who carried a ceremonial knife as part of his Sikh faith, lied to officers about Nowak racially abusing him and knocking off his turban. The system responded by treating the white victim as the presumptive aggressor. Digwa was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, but the damage—to Nowak, his family, and public trust—was irreversible. The Inversion of JusticeAt the Center for Human Equality, founded by Russell McAlmond in Oregon, we hold that every human life possesses inherent dignity and worth, independent of race, ethnicity, religion, or any collective category. The police response in this case violated that principle. Officers did not evaluate Nowak as an individual in distress but through the prism of presumed group dynamics: white Briton versus minority claimant. This "two-tier" approach—widely criticized in the ensuing public outcry—reflects how DEI ideology institutionalizes group favoritism under the guise of correcting historical wrongs. DEI frameworks train institutions to view society as a battle of oppressor and oppressed groups. In practice, this often flips traditional prejudices rather than eliminating them. "Systemic racism" against so-called "white" young men becomes permissible, even obligatory, because the ideology redefines racism not as individual prejudice or harm but as power plus privilege—a malleable concept that excuses bias when directed at majority or "privileged" groups. The result is not the end of racism but its color swap: discrimination justified by new hierarchies. In the Nowak case, concern for a potential racism complaint apparently outweighed the visible reality of fatal stab wounds. Prime Minister Keir Starmer himself acknowledged "serious questions" about how racism accusations shaped police decision-making. This is not isolated. It exemplifies a broader pattern where institutions, fearing charges of institutional racism, adopt policies that prejudge individuals by skin color or perceived group status. Young British men like Nowak—often portrayed in cultural narratives as inherently privileged or problematic—pay the price with their lives. True justice demands impartiality: assess the bleeding man first, verify claims second. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);">Prioritizing narrative protection over emergency response betrays the ethical core of policing.<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);">Why DEI Fails and Divides<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);">DEI ideology promises equity but delivers division. They erode public confidence, fuel resentment, and, as seen in Southampton, cost lives. Protests following Nowak's case highlighted widespread frustration with this "two-tier policing," where equal protection under the law gives way to identity-based calculus. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);">Ethical Individualism: The Path Forward<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);">The only durable solution is Ethical Individualism—the philosophy at the heart of the Center for Human Equality's mission. British Injustice and DEI

With resurgent tribalism, identity politics, and collectivist ideologies, two philosophies stand out for their uncompromising defense of the individual: Ayn Rand’s Objectivism and Russell McAlmond’s Ethical Individualism (EIT). While distinct in scope and tone, they are profoundly complementary. Objectivism provides a rigorous, hierarchical foundation in metaphysics, epistemology, and personal ethics. Ethical Individualism supplies a practical, relational ethics for everyday human interactions. Their synthesis yields a more complete systematic philosophy—one that grounds anti-collectivism in objective reality and reason while offering actionable principles for mutual respect, trust, and voluntary cooperation. Foundations: Objectivism’s Metaphysical and Epistemological AxiomsObjectivism begins with three self-evident axioms: existence exists (reality is objective and independent of consciousness), consciousness is conscious (we identify existence through perception), and the law of identity (A is A—things have specific natures). From these flow the primacy of existence, the efficacy of reason as the sole means of knowledge, and the rejection of mysticism and subjectivism. Rand’s epistemology demands objective concept-formation through observation, integration, and logic. This produces a reality-oriented mind capable of understanding the world and acting accordingly. Man, in Objectivism, is a rational, volitional being whose survival and flourishing depend on the exercise of reason and productive achievement. Ethics flows directly: rational self-interest (egoism) is the moral ideal. One’s own life and happiness are the standard of value; productive work and voluntary trade are the proper means. Altruism—the demand for self-sacrifice—is rejected as immoral because it contradicts the requirements of human life. These foundations are powerful but can feel abstract or austere when applied to daily interpersonal relations. Objectivism excels at defining the sovereign individual and condemning collectivism in principle, yet it leaves room for a more detailed relational framework.Ethical Individualism: A Relational Ethics of Human DignityMcAlmond’s Ethical Individualism, presented as a “human relational philosophy,” addresses precisely this domain. Its core axioms include:The primacy of individuality: Each person is a unique, irreplaceable “mosaic of experiences,” thoughts, and potentials—not reducible to group labels. The infinite and equal worth of every human being: All possess equal inherent moral value simply by virtue of being human; there are no hierarchies based on group membership. The inviolable inner freedom and moral agency of the individual. The immorality of group judgmentalism: Judging people by stereotypes, collective guilt, race, religion, politics, or other group identities is unethical and dehumanizing. Interactions must proceed qua human—person to person, based on individual character and actions.&nbsp; EIT is pragmatic and optimistic. Rooted in McAlmond’s background in finance and ethical universalism (“love your neighbor”), it emphasizes win-win, symbiotic relationships built on trust and mutual respect. It directly counters the tribal fragmentation of modern culture by insisting that genuine human connection requires stripping away prejudicial overlays. While deeply ethical, EIT is less concerned with ultimate metaphysical grounding or personal egoism. It risks appearing as a standalone relational code without deeper justification against relativism or subjectivism.Synthesis: A Hierarchical, Systematic PhilosophyIntegrating the two creates a coherent, multi-layered system:Metaphysics and Epistemology (Objectivist Base): Reality is objective; reason is the tool of survival and knowledge. This anchors EIT’s individualism in something firmer than sentiment. The unique “mosaic” of each person is not a postmodern construct but a fact of identity—A is A. Group judgmentalism is not merely unkind; it is anti-reason, a flight from objective assessment of individual character.Personal Ethics (Objectivist Egoism + EIT Dignity): Rational self-interest provides the “why” for ethical behavior. One treats others with respect not out of selfless duty but because it serves one’s life: trustworthy relationships, productive trade, and a civilized society enable personal flourishing. EIT’s equal worth and anti-groupism refine this by clarifying that rational self-interest never justifies initiating force, fraud, or dehumanization. Respect becomes a rational value—one’s own mind demands consistency and justice in judgment. Relational Ethics (EIT Enhanced by Objectivism): Here EIT shines. The trader principle of Objectivism—voluntary exchange of value for value—perfectly complements McAlmond’s symbiosis and win-win ethos. Relationships are not zero-sum or sacrificial; they are mutual exchanges of material, intellectual, and spiritual values. One judges others by their individual actions and character (reason + EIT’s anti-judgmentalism), fostering trust without demanding unearned loyalty or forgiveness of vices. Politics and Society: Both philosophies converge on classical liberalism, individual rights, and capitalism. Objectivism supplies the rights theory (based on man’s nature as a rational being). EIT adds a cultural practice: a society of sovereign individuals interacting qua human rejects identity politics, affirmative action by group, and collective guilt. Limited government protects rights so that unique mosaics may pursue happiness through reason and trade.&nbsp; This synthesis resolves potential tensions. Rand’s egoism might seem cold; EIT warms it with relational warmth while grounding it in self-interest (respecting others’ individuality benefits your life). EIT’s emphasis on equal worth gains objective defense against egalitarian subjectivism or mystical “souls.” The result is neither purely inward heroic individualism nor vague relational goodwill, but a philosophy of rational human flourishing—personal and interpersonal.Strengths and Advantages of the Integrated ViewComprehensiveness: It spans from axioms of reality to daily encounters, avoiding the abstraction of pure Objectivism or the potential under-theorization of standalone EIT. Anti-Collectivist Power: Group judgmentalism is refuted metaphysically (individuals have identity, groups do not in the same way), epistemologically (stereotypes evade reason), and ethically (it violates both self-interest and human dignity). Practical Guidance: In polarized times, it offers clear behavioral norms—engage each person as a unique rational being, trade values, judge justly—while providing intellectual armor against tribal appeals. Moral Optimism: Human beings, capable of reason, can build societies of mutual benefit rather than perpetual conflict. Conclusion: A Philosophy for the Individual in FullSynthesizing Objectivism and Ethical Individualism produces a philosophy greater than the sum of its parts: reality-oriented, reason-driven, egoistic in the service of life, and relationally humane. It affirms the heroic potential of the individual while insisting that true flourishing occurs through just, voluntary interactions with other sovereign beings. In rejecting both selfless altruism and predatory collectivism, it charts a path of rational benevolence—earned respect, mutual advantage, and the celebration of human uniqueness. This integrated framework is not merely theoretical. It equips people to navigate a fracturing world with clarity, integrity, and hope: judge individuals, not groups; pursue your happiness through productive achievement and honest trade; recognize the equal moral worth of every human mosaic. In doing so, we honor both the towering independence celebrated by Rand and the relational dignity articulated by McAlmond—creating a more complete vision for human life and society.

Objectivism and Ethical Individualism

The Center for Human Equality in Oregon champions Ethical Individualism, the philosophy articulated by our founder Russell McAlmond. This approach affirms the inherent equal dignity and unique value of every human being as an individual, rejecting all forms of group judgmentalism and collective hierarchies. Ethical Individualism insists that rights belong to persons, not to classes, races, ethnicities, or other identity groups. It draws deeply from the American founding and finds powerful expression in the writings of John Locke, whose ideas profoundly shaped the United States’ commitment to life, liberty, and property. By examining Locke’s philosophy, we see how it underpins Ethical Individualism and why preserving the rights of the smallest minority—the unique individual—remains essential to human flourishing. In his Second Treatise of Government (1689), John Locke described a state of nature in which individuals are born free and equal, endowed by nature and their Creator with inalienable rights. Locke wrote: “Being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions.” He grounded property rights in self-ownership: “Every man has a property in his own person: this no body has any right to but himself. The labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we may say, are properly his.” Through mixing labor with the resources of the earth, individuals justly acquire property, which serves as the material foundation for personal independence and flourishing. These ideas directly influenced America’s founding documents. Thomas Jefferson, drawing from Locke, proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The substitution of “pursuit of Happiness” for “Property” reflected an emphasis on the broader human capacity for self-improvement and fulfillment, but the Lockean foundation remained intact: government exists to secure individual rights, deriving its just powers from the consent of the governed. The founders rejected European systems of hereditary classes, estates, and group privileges, establishing instead a republic where rights inhere in the individual. Locke’s philosophy aligns seamlessly with Ethical Individualism. Both recognize the individual as the fundamental unit of moral and political concern. Locke’s view of self-ownership and natural rights rejects the notion that some groups possess superior claims by birth or status. Ethical Individualism extends this by insisting that we treat every person according to their unique character and actions, never reducing them to representatives of a collective identity. The smallest minority in America is not defined by race, class, or any demographic category, but by the irreducible uniqueness of each individual human being. Protecting this minority—safeguarding personal liberty, conscience, and property—creates the conditions for genuine human flourishing: innovation, voluntary cooperation, moral responsibility, and personal achievement. The success of the American experiment demonstrates this truth. By eliminating the class warfare inherent in Old World hierarchies—where nobles, clergy, and commoners held unequal rights—the founders unleashed the potential of free individuals. No longer were people born into fixed stations with predetermined privileges or burdens. Instead, the equal protection of natural rights allowed talent, effort, and character to determine outcomes. Immigrants and natives alike could rise through industry and ingenuity. This radical individualism produced unprecedented prosperity, mobility, and freedom, making the United States a beacon for human aspiration worldwide. Any regression from the liberty of the individual back toward group rights and revived classes threatens to destroy this human relational formula. When government or culture begins assigning rights, privileges, or liabilities based on group identity—whether racial preferences, collective guilt, or class-based redistribution—it reintroduces the very hierarchies the founders dismantled. Such policies erode personal responsibility, foster resentment and division, and undermine the voluntary cooperation that drives prosperity. Locke warned against arbitrary power that violates natural rights; Ethical Individualism similarly cautions that treating individuals as avatars of groups violates human equality and invites tyranny, whether soft or overt. Locke understood that true human flourishing requires secure individual rights within a framework of law and morality. Ethical Individualism, as promoted by the Center for Human Equality, revives and applies this wisdom to contemporary challenges. We affirm that America’s greatness lies not in elevating any group above others, but in defending the equal moral worth and unique potential of every person. By recommitting to Lockean principles—life, liberty, and property (or its pursuit)—we reject class warfare and identity tribalism. We embrace instead a society where individuals relate as equals, free to pursue their happiness without coercive group classifications. The path forward for Oregon and the nation is clear: recommit to the rights of the unique individual. Only by upholding Ethical Individualism can we preserve the conditions that made America the most prosperous and free nation in history. Let us honor Locke’s legacy and the founders’ vision by ensuring that every policy, every cultural norm, and every personal interaction recognizes the equal dignity and irreplaceable uniqueness of every human soul. This is the essence of human equality and the surest foundation for continued human flourishing.

John Locke and Ethical Individualism

The Center for Human Equality in Oregon stands firm in its commitment to a foundational American principle: every human being is unique, irreplaceable, and deserving of equal respect and dignity. At the heart of this mission lies Ethical Individualism, the human relational philosophy conceived by Russell McAlmond in his seminal work, Ethical Individualism: A Human Relational Philosophy. This framework rejects group-based judgments in all forms—whether rooted in race, ideology, religion, or identity politics—and insists that we relate to one another as unique individuals. It offers a compelling alternative to the collectivist pitfalls of our time, including the rise of Christian nationalism. Ethical Individualism is not an abstract theory but a practical guide for everyday human interactions. It prioritizes mutual trust, respect, and dignity in every encounter. McAlmond developed it as a secular philosophy that optimizes relationships by focusing on the person before us—not the demographic category they represent. It stands in direct opposition to any ideology that elevates one group above another, declaring that true equality flows from recognizing the inherent worth of the individual. True Christianity and the Roots of American EqualityChristian nationalism must not be conflated with Christianity itself. Authentic Christian teaching affirms the profound equality of all people: every human being is created in the image of God (imago Dei). This biblical insight undergirds the Declaration of Independence’s ringing assertion that “all men are created equal” and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights. The Founders drew on this universal human dignity to craft a nation where rights belong to individuals, not to favored religious or ethnic groups. True Christianity, at its core, inspires humility, love for neighbor, and justice for all—values that transcend tribal boundaries and call believers to serve rather than dominate. Christian nationalism, by contrast, distorts this heritage. It elevates Christians as inherently superior politicians, citizens, or human beings simply by virtue of their faith. It implies that national identity and political power should privilege one religious group over others—believers and non-believers alike. This elevation treats non-Christians as lesser participants in the American experiment, judged not by their character, actions, or contributions, but by their lack of Christian affiliation. Such group favoritism mirrors the very collectivism it often claims to oppose. The Parallel with Group JudgmentalismThis approach engages in the same error as other identity-based movements, such as certain implementations of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Both substitute group membership for individual merit. Christian nationalism applies group judgmentalism to non-Christians, deeming them suspect or second-class in the public square. DEI often applies parallel judgments to other groups, assigning collective guilt or privilege based on race, gender, or other categories. Ethical Individualism rejects both. It insists that judging individuals by their group identity—whether to uplift Christians or any other demographic—is morally wrong and practically corrosive to human relations. McAlmond’s philosophy exposes the root problem: all forms of groupism obscure the unique mosaic of experiences, choices, and character that define each person. When we reduce someone to their religious label, racial category, or political tribe, we fail to see them fully. We replace empathy and discernment with stereotypes and suspicion. This not only violates human dignity but undermines the social trust essential to a free society.Un-American in Spirit and PracticeChristian nationalism is also un-American because it departs from our founding commitment to equality under the law for every individual. The United States was not established as a confessional state where citizenship or political legitimacy depends on adherence to a particular faith. Our Constitution deliberately avoids establishing religion, protecting the rights of conscience for all—Christian, Jew, Muslim, atheist, or otherwise. Elevating any religious group as “better” politicians or citizens contradicts the principle that government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed, not from ecclesiastical approval. Ethical Individualism reaffirms the American ideal: we judge fellow citizens by their actions and character as unique individuals, not by group affiliation. This approach fosters genuine pluralism, where people of all faiths (or none) can participate fully in the life of the republic without fear of second-class status. It promotes win-win relationships built on mutual respect rather than zero-sum competitions between identity blocs.A Call to Ethical IndividualismThe Center for Human Equality calls on Oregonians and all Americans to embrace Ethical Individualism as the 21st-century standard for human relations. This means: Treating every person we meet as a unique universe of value, worthy of respect human qua human. Rejecting policies and rhetoric that privilege one religious group over others in public life. Affirming the equality inspired by imago Dei while refusing to weaponize faith for political supremacy. Building institutions and communities that evaluate individuals on merit, character, and conduct—not inherited group traits. Russell McAlmond’s vision provides a moral North Star for navigating our polarized age. It does not demand the abandonment of religious conviction but calls believers and non-believers alike to a higher relational ethic: see the individual first. In doing so, we honor the best of America’s heritage and the deepest truths about human worth. At the Center for Human Equality, we believe this philosophy can heal divisions and restore trust. By rejecting group judgmentalism—whether in the guise of Christian nationalism, DEI orthodoxy, or any other collectivist ideology—we reclaim the promise of a society where every person stands equal before the law and in one another’s eyes. The path forward is clear: ethical individualism for every unique human being. Let us choose dignity over dominance, individuality over identity, and equality over elevation. This is the Oregon way—and the American way—worth fighting for.

Christian Nationalism Is Wrong

At the Center for Human Equality, we champion Ethical Individualism—the principled recognition that every human being deserves equality of respect as a unique individual, not as a representative of any group identity, race, sex, or collective stereotype. This philosophy demands rigorous intellectual honesty and moral clarity. Central to it is a commitment to reason as the guiding light for our positions, tempered by positive emotions such as empathy and compassion for every person. We reject the tyranny of unchecked emotions in public discourse and decision-making, for they undermine the very equality we seek to uphold. Reason is the rational function of the human mind. It is the capacity for logical analysis, evidence-based evaluation, and pragmatic problem-solving. Philosophers across the ages have consistently urged humanity to elevate reason above raw emotion when making decisions. Emotions, while part of our humanity, are subjective, reactive, and often fleeting. When they rule, they cloud judgment, inflame divisions, and lead to injustice. Reason, by contrast, seeks truth and practical outcomes that serve the dignity of the individual.Aristotle captured this enduring truth when he stated, “The Law Is Reason, Free From Passion.” Laws—and by extension, ethical principles and societal norms—must arise from rational deliberation, not the passions of the moment. Reason ensures consistency, fairness, and respect for the individual, preventing the arbitrary sway of personal feelings or mob sentiment. In argumentation, the contrast between reason and emotion becomes starkly visible. Reason is pragmatic and logical. It engages with ideas on their merits: presenting evidence, constructing coherent syllogisms, anticipating counterarguments, and adjusting positions when better data emerges. It addresses the issue at hand, fostering genuine dialogue and progress toward understanding or resolution.Emotions, when they dominate debate, frequently devolve into tactics that reveal intellectual weakness rather than strength. These include name-calling, insulting someone’s intelligence or level of education, and ad hominem attacks—targeting the person rather than the argument. Such responses shift focus from the substance of the claim to the character or background of the speaker. They do not refute ideas; they evade them. When a debater resorts to these emotional tactics, they have effectively conceded the intellectual ground. As Socrates wisely observed, “When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.” Insults and personal attacks signal the absence of a substantive intellectual response. They stem from emotional frustration rather than reasoned conviction. The person who descends into ad hominem has lost the argument not because their opponent “won” through force, but because they themselves have abandoned the tools of reason. This does not mean the Center for Human Equality dismisses emotions entirely. Positive emotions—empathy for the suffering of a fellow human being, compassion for the vulnerable, and a deep sense of shared dignity—are vital. They humanize our ethics and motivate us to act on rational principles. We feel empathy for every individual, regardless of background, and this emotional resonance reinforces our commitment to Ethical Individualism. However, these feelings must remain subordinate to reason. Empathy without rational boundaries can lead to favoritism or group-based preferences that undermine true equality. Compassion guided by reason ensures policies and attitudes that respect every person qua person. In today’s polarized climate, emotional argumentation often masquerades as moral superiority. It fuels cancel culture, identity politics, and collective blame—approaches antithetical to judging individuals on their own merits. By contrast, the Center for Human Equality insists on reason as our standard. We evaluate policies, ideas, and behaviors through logical scrutiny: Does this promote the equal dignity and liberty of the individual? Does it rely on evidence or assumption? Does it treat people as ends in themselves, or as means to group outcomes? Ethical Individualism calls us to rise above emotional tribalism. It demands we engage opponents with respect for their humanity, even as we rigorously challenge their ideas. This path is not always easy—it requires self-discipline to master one’s passions and courage to stand for principle amid emotional appeals. Yet it is the only path worthy of a free and equal society. The Center for Human Equality in Oregon invites all who value reason, individual dignity, and true equality to join us. Let us build a culture where arguments are won on merit, not volume or venom; where compassion flows from rational commitment to human worth; and where every person is seen first and foremost as a sovereign individual. In the words of philosophical tradition, let reason rule—so that justice, equality, and human flourishing may prevail.

Reason Versus Emotions

At the heart of humanity’s spiritual quest lies a simple, universal principle echoed across cultures and centuries: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This golden rule appears in Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and many indigenous traditions. It reflects a recognition of shared human dignity that transcends creed. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(18px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal);">Yet today, some religious movements contradict this foundation by promoting hatred, coercion, supremacy, or violence against non-believers.The Center for Human Equality asserts a clear standard: only peaceful religions can be legitimate paths to God or spiritual truth. Any doctrine that commands harm to others, forces conversion, punishes apostasy with death, or claims inherent superiority for its adherents fails the test of legitimacy because it violates the ethical core shared by the world’s great faiths and undermines the equal worth of every human being.Legitimate religion must align with the moral consensus of humanity. If one faith teaches love for the neighbor while another declares that God demands the murder of outsiders who refuse to believe in a specific way, the latter cannot represent the same divine source. Such a contradiction reveals that the violent doctrine is not a path to God but a human invention serving earthly power. A true connection to the divine would not require violating the central ethical teachings found in nearly all other traditions. Peaceful coexistence and respect for individual conscience are not optional extras; they are the litmus test of authenticity.Religions that demand conversion under threat of death or subjugation are inherently illegitimate. Coercion replaces genuine faith with fear. Authentic spirituality arises from free choice and inner conviction, not the sword or the threat of violence. History shows that forced conversions produce outward compliance, not transformed hearts. Any system that treats “believe or die” as a divine mandate prioritizes domination over devotion and therefore cannot originate from a God of love, justice, or truth. Similarly, religions that prescribe death for those who leave the faith reveal their own insecurity and falsehood. A legitimate path to God welcomes sincere seekers and respects the freedom to follow conscience, even when it leads away. Killing apostates transforms religion into a prison rather than a liberation. It denies the very possibility of authentic belief by removing the right to say “no.” Such a practice contradicts the principle of loving one’s neighbor and treats human beings as property rather than sovereign moral agents.Supremacist doctrines that declare adherents to be superior human beings—or that label non-believers as subhuman—echo the worst ideologies of racial nationalism, including the Nazi worldview that divided humanity into “superior” and “inferior” groups. No legitimate religion can dehumanize others or claim exclusive worth for its members. Ethical Individualism, the foundational philosophy of human equality, insists that each person possesses inherent dignity regardless of belief, ethnicity, or background. Grouping human beings into hierarchies of spiritual worth and declaring one’s own group supreme violates this principle and cannot reflect divine will. God, if truly universal, does not create second-class humans. We at the Center for Human Equality respect and celebrate peaceful religions. Traditions that emphasize compassion, personal moral growth, charity, and harmony with others enrich human life and deserve protection and appreciation. Buddhism’s call to reduce suffering, Christianity’s command to love enemies, Judaism’s pursuit of justice, Hinduism’s recognition of multiple paths to the divine, and countless other peaceful expressions of faith all contribute to a healthier world. These traditions align with the equal moral worth of every individual. In contrast, we cannot extend legitimacy to movements that weaponize faith against Ethical Individualism. Religions or ideologies that:Command violence against non-believers, Enforce apostasy laws, Demand supremacist hierarchies, or Dehumanize outsiders fail as spiritual paths because they contradict the shared moral heritage of humanity. They serve tribal power rather than transcendent truth. This position does not constitute an attack on religion itself. It is a defense of religion’s highest potential. By insisting on peace, freedom of conscience, and human equality as non-negotiable criteria, we invite all faiths to examine their teachings against the standard of universal love. Those that pass this test strengthen the human family. Those that fail reveal themselves as political or cultural projects masquerading as divine revelation. The Center for Human Equality in Oregon calls upon people of all backgrounds to affirm this principle: legitimate religion uplifts every human being as an equal child of the divine or worthy moral agent. It never demands hatred, murder, coercion, or supremacy. Only peaceful religions can guide us toward a more just, compassionate, and spiritually authentic world. In upholding this standard, we honor the best of humanity’s spiritual traditions and protect the equal dignity of every person.
